Dental emergencies never happen at a convenient time. They’re usually sudden, uncomfortable, and stressful—and we get how overwhelming that can feel. That’s why we want you to know what to do if something goes wrong, and when it’s time to reach out.
What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
Not every dental issue needs same-day care, but some situations really shouldn’t wait. Here are a few signs to take seriously:
- A tooth that’s been knocked out
- Intense or lingering tooth pain
- Swelling in your face or jaw
- Bleeding that doesn’t stop
If you’re unsure whether it’s an emergency, go ahead and call us. It’s always better to check than to wait and wonder.
Here’s What To Do in Common Situations:
- Knocked-Out Tooth
Try to handle the tooth by the crown (the top part, not the root). If it’s dirty, rinse it gently with water—no scrubbing. If you can, place it back in the socket. If that’s not possible, keep it in a container of milk or your saliva. Call us and head to the office right away—timing matters here, and we’ll do everything we can to save the tooth. - Broken or Chipped Tooth
Rinse your mouth with warm water, and if you can find the broken pieces, bring them with you. Use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to help with swelling, then give us a call so we can take care of it. - Toothache
Gently rinse with warm salt water and floss to ensure nothing is stuck. Avoid placing aspirin directly on your gums, as it can cause a burn. If the pain doesn’t go away or gets worse, don’t tough it out. Call us. - Swelling or Infection
Swelling, especially when accompanied by a fever, difficulty swallowing, or trouble breathing, can be a sign of a serious condition. Please don’t wait. Give us a call right away so we can get you the care you need.
We’re Here for You
Emergencies are never fun, but you’re not alone. We do our best to see emergency patients quickly and get you out of pain. If you’re ever unsure, please don’t hesitate to call—we’d rather you check in than try to power through something that needs attention.
